EDCI 6158: Trends and Issues in Middle/Secondary Education
Course Syllabus
Columbus State's College of Education mission is to achieve excellence by guiding individuals as they become professionals. The primary expectation of graduate-level programs is that candidates will develop expertise in content knowledge, pedagogy, and professional knowledge.
Attendance Policy
This course is on an accelerated summer schedule, and it entails reduced seat-time. Therefore, attendance and active participation (in class activities and online/outside-of-class activities) is vital to your success. Missing more than 3 hours of “work time” will result in failing this class.
ADA Accommodation Statement Please see information on CSU's website.
National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS)
NBPTS Propositions detail what accomplished teachers know, do, and believe. Presumably, all CSU graduate students aspire to becoming accomplished teachers, and their interest in NBPTS precepts supports their professional development.
The five propositions are these:
Teachers are committed to students and their learning.
Teachers know the subjects they teach and how to teach those subjects to students.
Teachers are responsible for managing and monitoring student learning.
Teachers think systematically about their practice and learn from experience.
Teachers are members of learning communities.
Course Outcomes
The faculty anticipates that master’s degree candidates successfully completing this course will demonstrate substantial achievement and/or growth in each of the following essential course objectives:
Knowledge of Education Trends and Issues Students will refine their knowledge of trends in pedagogy, of developments in curriculum, and of significant educational issues at local, state, and national levels.
Detailed Knowledge of a Selected Trend and/or Issue Students will conduct research to gain detailed knowledge of a specific trend and/or issue and share this knowledge with other members of the class.
Hands-On Knowledge of Instruction Related to Trends/Issues Students will investigate, review, and develop a curricular/awareness project to apply knowledge of current education trends/issues to a local instructional setting.
Course Requirements
Education Trends & Issues Wikipage: Worth 40% of final course grade. Students will each create a wikipage (website) focused on a specific trend/issue of their choice. This wikipage is designed to promote awareness of and disseminate information on specific trends and issues within the field of middle/secondary education. Students will consult scholarly articles/sources and sources in “popular media” while completing this project. Trends & Issues Curriculum/Project Proposal: Worth 30% of final course grade. Students will design a proposal for a curriculum-related or community-related project/event connected to their wikipage topic. The purpose of this proposal is to ask “permission” from a P-12 school administrator to adopt a project/event within a school setting. The project may be curriculum-related (e.g. adopting new textbooks, taking a class field trip, bringing in a guest speaker, etc.). Or, the project may be a school-wide “event” (i.e. fundraiser, awareness assembly, field trip, etc.). In this proposal, students will gain experience linking knowledge of current trends and issues to their local curricula; by writing a proposal, students learn how to “sell” their ideas to a real-world audience: school administrators.
Attendance/Participation: Worth 10% of final course grade. It is expected that students come to class prepared, with the necessary materials, and actively participate in class activities. Further, studentswill also participate in online (or outside-of-class) activities. Take-Home Reflection: Worth 20% of final course grade. This assignment will be given to students during the first week of class.
GRADES:
With the exception of occasional informal writing, all work for EDCI 6158 will be evaluated in terms of content, clarity, and mastery of the conventions of edited American English.
Final Grade Scale: 90-100 A, 80-89 B, 70-79 C, 60-69 D, 59 and below F
